Arched Alcove Cabinet & Shelves

Arched Alcove Cabinet & Shelves

Big project for Taylor’s new house.  Empty arched alcove needed a custom cabinet and 2 floating shelves.  The shelves were made from laminated white oak plywood with solid white oak edge banding on the front.  I put a centered dado around the three wall-side edges to slide over the plywood brackets mounted to the wall. This was so it could be supported on all sides while being “floating”.

The cabinet carcasses were built from pre-finished birch plywood from Menards, pretty nice stuff actually. I made the adjustable shelves with the same but added hardwood edge banding to the front edge.  I made the face frame from select pine.  The cabinet top is from laminated MDF.  The MDF and Pine were chosen since she was going to paint the cabinet.

Materials

White Oak, White Oak Plywood (Forest Lumber), Pre-finished Plywood, Select Pine, Birch Glue-on Edge Banding, CabinetNow Shaker Cabinet Doors

Finish

Floating Shelves: Minwax Weathered Oak stain, High Performance Polyurethane (Flat)

Cabinet: Arm-R-Seal (Semi), White Primer

Project Notes

Struggled with the scribing for both shelves and the cabinet top.  Using the 1/4″ MDF strips and building a template worked really well, used the spindle sander to sand right up to the line.  Using caulking to fill in the gaps worked great.
