Cutting Board – Canarywood & Padauk

Spalted Maple & Epoxy Desktop

My biggest project to date, this was a large maple slab with a lot of spalting and the most curl across a single slab I’d ever seen. It required extensive clean up of bark edges, bark inclusions, punky rotted areas, large voids and a significant crack in the middle. I added 6 large bowties to stabilize the crack and inset C-Channel on the underside to minimize cupping.

Materials

Curly Spalted Maple Slab, Liquid Glass Deep Pour, Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy, 3/4″ C-Channel, TransTint Black Dye

Finish

Rubio Monocoat

Project Notes

Spalted Maple can have of punky wood and despite using both penetrating epoxy and a thin first layer of the deep pour epoxy, I still had staining on the most punky areas. It would better to do an initial deep pour to set a base, before doing the rest of the pour.
